Wigan 1 Tottenham 2: Gareth Bale Helps Spurs to Victory
Filed under: Tottenham, Wigan, Premier League, Football, Match Reports
Rafael van der Vaart and Gareth Bale scored their first league goals of the season as Tottenham clocked up a third straight top-flight win.
Despite the narrow scoreline, it was far too comfortable for Harry Redknapp's side as Wigan, who have now lost their last four, found themselves 2-0 down midway through the first half after some dreadful defending.
A howler by Maynor Figueroa gifted Van der Vaart a third minute goal before Bale's 23rd minute header ended the home side's six-game unbeaten run at home.
Mohamed Diame reduced the deficit early in the second half, but Wigan's hopes of a comeback ended when Steve Gohouri was sent off for a second bookable offence.
THE GOALS
3mins: Horrendous mistake by Figueroa allows Emmanuel Adebayor to square for Van der Vaart to lash his first Premier League goal of season into the top corner from 12-yards. Far too easy. (0-1)
23mins: Memories of that horrendous 9-1 defeat Martinez's Wigan suffered at White Hart Lane in November 2009 are flooding back as Bale's perfectly placed header from Luka Modric's corner doubles the lead midway through the first half. (0-2)
50mins: Hope for the home side as Diame finds the net after substitute Ronnie Stam had latched on to Benoit Assou-Ekotto's poor clearance. (1-2)
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
7mins: And that should have been 2-0. Adebayor presented with glorious chance but cannot keep his composure as he fires high over the bar when should have done much better.
15mins: More woeful defending from Wigan as Kyle Walker is allowed a free header from six-yards. Fortunately for the hosts, the full-back is unable to find the target.
28mins: Home fans cannot believe what they are seeing following a carbon copy move to the second goal. This time, however, Bale's header flies over the bar.
39mins: That's a fine save by Ali Al Habsi as he beats away Adebayor's powerful strike with the visitors still well on top.
62mins: And that looks like the end of Wigan's hopes of a comeback as Gohouri is given his marching orders after receiving a second yellow card.

REACTION:
Redknapp was not happy after his side allowed Wigan a lifeline in the second half:
"It was complete domination in the first half. We could have come in three or four goals up at half time. I said to the player that they only way they were going to get back into the game is if you go and do something stupid and give them a goal.
"And that's exactly what we did. Their goal lifted them, and the fans went from giving them stick to getting behind them. The keeper's not really had too much to do but It was still too close for comfort in the end."
On the absence of Jermain Defoe due to an upset stomach:
"We sent him home this morning. We got a car to drive him back to London. He was really ill, he had a real high temperature."
On the way his team has responded after losing the first two matches:
"We've got a strong squad and I've got some good players. I think we'll only get better. We're going to be strong. It's three good points and it's now nine points out of nine. I never had any doubts because I have a really good team. I didn't have a fit midfield at the start of the season."
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez tried to stay positive after another defeat:
"It would have been very easy for the players to feel sorry for themselves after going 2-0 down. But we stopped Spurs from having momentum and coped well after the sending off."
On his team's slow start to the game:
"Tactically, we couldn't cope with Spurs in the first 45 minutes. We needed to develop our performance. It was a mistake that led to the first goal and the second was from a corner."
WHAT IT MEANS:
Tottenham's season goes from strength to strength. They demonstrated they can cope without striker Defoe, and head into next weekend's north London derby with Arsenal on the back of a good run of league form. Wigan quickly need to find a cure for their defensive problems - or get used to another long seaon of struggle.

Wigan v Tottenham Preview: More to Come, Insists Emmanuel Adebayor
Filed under: Tottenham, Wigan, Premier League, Football, Match Previews
PREMIER LEAGUE: DW STADIUM, SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 2011. KICK-OFF: 1500 BST
The sour memories of Wigan's 9-1 hammering at White Hart Lane were largely eroded by picking up four points against Harry Redknapp's side last season.
After losing their opening two matches of the campaign, there was the 1-0 win at Spurs and they also had a goalless draw at the DW Stadium ahead of Tottenham's trip to Real Madrid.
With the transfer window closed, Redknapp will be hoping that the 4-0 hammering of Liverpool is a sign of things to come, while Roberto Martinez is desperate to get some points on the board.
The Latics' decent start has hit the buffers by being knocked out of the Carling Cup at Crystal Palace and Premier League defeats at Manchester City and Everton.

Key Match-Up: Gary Caldwell v Emmanuel Adebayor. With Antolin Alcaraz, Emmerson Boyce and Steve Gohouri all out injured, Latics captain Caldwell will have a key role against Adebayor. The Togo striker, 27, has managed three goals in his first two appearances for Spurs.
Form Guide: Unbeaten in their first three matches of the season, Wigan have lost three on the trot. Since the 5-1 hammering by Manchester City, Spurs have not conceded in four games, including Premier League wins over Wolves and Liverpool.
Odds: Wigan 3/1, Tottenham 10/11, Draw 5/2.
WIGAN:
For a team that has generally struggled for any kind of consistency in recent years, Wigan have quietly built an unbeaten run that stretches back to February.
Martinez was angered by the capitulation in the 3-0 defeat at City but far happier with the display in the 3-1 loss at Everton, where his team were on level terms until the 84th minute.
The Spaniard rarely discusses his previous assertion that Wigan will definitely finish in the top half of the table but it says much for his team's progress that he expects to pick up three points against Spurs.
The DW Stadium has attracted criticism for so long but Martinez feels it is becoming a stronghold.
Martinez told the club's website: "It seems an eternity away when you play away games, with travelling and we were involved in the League Cup as well.
"It's a little bit of a combination. We feel at home and it's easy to say that 'We're playing at home' but that brings expectations but we believe in the manner that we play, the fans have been fantastic.
"It's easy to see the chemistry that we're getting with the fans, we always play on the front foot and want to control the games and dominate the games and that's been a very positive way to play from our point of view."
Martinez believes Redknapp has picked up the ideal formation and tactics to bring the best out of Adebayor.
"We all know he's an outstanding footballer," Martinez added. "He had great experiences when he went to Real Madrid and obviously Arsenal and Manchester city and he's still at the peak of his career. He's a handful in any system.
"But now he's surrounded by players that get the best out of him and he's working really, really hard with players like Jermain Defoe, Luka Modric and Scott Parker, with the service of Gareth Bale.
"That makes an outstanding combination so he's one of the outstanding players that Spurs have got in their squad."
Strategy: The absence of Hugo Rodallega gives Martinez problems with goal-scoring and some fans will worry about the quality he is able to field in the three-man attacking midfield line behind Franco Di Santo. He may push James McCarthy forward to support Jordi Gomez and Victor Moses, with Mohamed Diame or Hendry Thomas drafted into midfield.
Injury Update: Rodallega will be out for around six weeks with a knee problem sustained at Everton and defenders Alcaraz (thigh) and Boyce (hamstring) but Martinez may recall Gohouri after a calf problem.
TOTTENHAM:
Tottenham striker Adebayor, despite his goalscoring start since arriving on loan from Manchester City, admits he is yet to reach peak fitness.
"It was four months since I played and I think it will take two or three games to be fit," said Adebayor. "Fortunately I had the chance to score on my debut and that gave me more confidence.
"Now I have to keep playing my football. I can't say I'm nearly there because I have to keep working for two or three games. But I'll work hard in training and the rest will follow."
Adebayor was forced to train with the youth team while at City after falling out with manager Roberto Mancini, who is trying to win the league title this year and has started the season strongly.
He added: "Maybe they can get a few injuries. Maybe they will tired. I don't know. At the moment they are playing good football and it's good for everyone to watch on TV.
"At Tottenham we have to keep doing what we're doing. We have great players: Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Jermain Defoe, I can mention many names.
"We just have to fight and believe we can be in the top four. If we believe we can, then we can do it."
Adebayor has suggested he would be willing to stay at White Hart Lane permanently.
He added: "I'm here for a year and have to enjoy myself. At the end of things the president, vice-president, manager, assistant manager, the fans, they will decide if they want me for another year. At the moment I am here for another year and there is no pressure at all."
Strategy: Spurs will want to pick up where they left off against Liverpool, attacking with pace from all areas. They have pace down the flanks but can also go through the middle.
Injury Update: Michael Dawson, William Gallas, Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone are out.
Everton 3 Wigan 1: Vellios is Everton’s New Hero After Late Winner
Filed under: Everton, Wigan, Premier League, Football, Match Reports
Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe scored late goals to end Everton's wait for a first home victory of the season against Roberto Martinez's Wigan.
The visitors took the lead when Franco Di Santo's scruffy effort beat Tim Howard, only for Phil Jagielka to equalise just two minutes later.
THE GOALS
31 mins: Di Santo collects a short corner and turns Leon Osman before hitting a deflected shot inside the far post (0-1).
33 mins: Osman's corner is headed on to the bar by Tim Cahill before Jagielka heads in the follow up (1-1).
84 mins: Vellios heads in from a Tony Hibbert cross to seal the points for Everton.
90 mins: Drenthe races on to a Vellios flick to add Everton's third.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
3 mins: Jack Rodwell shoots wide from just outside the area.
6 mins: Leighton Baines crosses from the left and Seamus Coleman's header is turned wide by Ali Al Habsi.
10 mins: Di Santo drives well wide from 30 yards after a quick Wigan break.
25 mins: Osman curls a shot over from 20 yards as Everton continue to press.
29mins: Coleman picks out Marouane Fellaini but the Belgian's close-range effort is blocked by Cahill.
35 mins: Baines misses with a free kick from just outside the area.
45 mins: Cahill heads over from a hanging Hibbert cross.
47 mins: Coleman's dangerous cross is deflected wide of goal.
61 mins: Hugo Rodallega is well off target with a free kick from 25 yards.
73 mins: Patrick van Aanholt's shot is deflected wide with Howard stranded.
85 mins: David Jones hits the bar as Wigan look for another quick equaliser.
REACTION:
David Moyes was relatively pleased with the contribution of his substitutes:
"If you judge them on goals I would have said 'Great' but the performance, 'no'. We needed to try something and we just ran out of ideas midway through the second half and we were looking for solutions to see how we could cause Wigan some more problems."
On signing Vellios from Iraklis for £50,000 in January
"I don't take credit for it. Docherty got me Seamus Coleman for £60,000 and the Greek boy for less than that so I have to give him the credit for that.
"If the scout's really think they're worthwhile then we bring them in. It's a lot for us to expect these boys to be Premier League players and it's very few you can turn intot that.
"Thankfully the one or two we've got have given us some competition, I think the Greek boy has got something. He's got a bit to do yet but he's certainly got something.
"He recommended the two players. Those two boys, because of the price one was £50,000 or £60,000."
On starting with Cahill and Osman in attack:
"That tells you a little bit about what we think because we are starting with Cahill and Osman because they've still got something to offer.
"They got between the lines and caused problems. We know we're short. We don't have someone at the moment who is a 15 or 20 goal a season centre forward but the ones that have come on have given us something to think about."
On collecting seven points from three games:
"I'm not going to get carried away. People always talk about the start but I don't when the 'start of the season' is over. We've got a couple of wins, we can play better and we have played better but I think it was an important game to win because I've said before we have to make sure we get the wins and go from there."
On Louis Saha tweeting about his frustration at being left out:
"He wasn't in the 18 and I like it when they're upset when they're not involved. I've got no problem with that at all.
"Everybody reports for the game and then we tell them the subs, they knew the team.
"I don't know whether he went home and I'm not really that bothered. I was more interested in the 11 players and that's what everyone should have been concentrating on."
Martinez expects to be without Rodallega for several months:
"It's really too early to say. We're going to assess him but I think it's going to be the medial ligament in his right knee. We're going to do the scans but it isn't good at the moment. He looked sharp.
"He took time after the Copa America to get back to his level and he's looked back to his level so that will be a real blow.
"In our football club any player not available is a real blow. We had Emmerson Boyce and Antolin Alcaraz missing, as well as Steve Gohouri, and that is a big hole in the squad.
"When someone with the experience of Hugo Rodallega who has been scoring an average of 10 goals a season and it is a real blow but in football those things happen.
"It's a real blow to lose someone of his status and stature."
On his team's performance:
"You come place like Goodison and you have to deal with two basic things -- the height in set-plays at the way they attack them and then just the crosses.
"Apart from the two where we were heavily punished, we controlled the game, we felt comfortable. We had a couple of good opportunities.
"It was one of those days where you don't get the result the performance deserves.
"Ninety per cent of our performance was what we wanted and that little 10 per cent, not stopping two crosses from the right back. I feel that we got heavily punished.
"If we played this game 10 times we'd get something out of it in nine of them."
WHAT IT MEANS: Everton can breathe a little easier after collecting seven points from three games but Moyes concedes that his attack is still a work in progress. More of a problem than the defeat for Wigan, will be coping without the threat of Rodallega for much of the season. The Columbian has been their main striker for the past two years and will take some replacing.

Everton v Wigan Preview: A Real Must-Win Game for David Moyes
Filed under: Everton, Wigan, Premier League, Football, Match Previews
PREMIER LEAGUE, GOODISON PARK, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2011: KICK-OFF: 1500 BST
Must-win games are nothing new to David Moyes.
After all, Everton opened the season with a must-win fixture to lift the mood after a summer of financial restraint at Goodison.
Defeat to QPR ensured the next game at Blackburn became another must-win game.
While Moyes' side came away from Ewood with three points, Everton's failure to defeat Aston Villa in the next match means Wigan's visit has suddenly become a game the Toffees have to secure maximum points from.
Failure to win another league game at home could spell trouble as four of Everton's next five games after this are against Manchester City (away), Liverpool (home), Chelsea (away) and Manchester United (home).
Tweeter Facebook FourSquare iPhone
Wigan will certainly not make it easy for the hosts.
Back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Crystal Palace, in the Carling Cup, has resulted in Latics manager Roberto Martinez demanding an immediate improvement from his players.
But it will not have escaped Moyes' attention that Wigan were one of only two clubs who managed to stop his side from scoring at Goodison in the league last season.
Key Match-up: Tim Cahill v Ali Al Habsi: Wigan keeper Al Habsi managed to keep a clean sheet on his last visit to Goodison and he will be desperate to frustrate Everton again after conceding three at Manchester City last week. Cahill has yet to score for Everton this season but that will not fool Wigan as the Australian has a history of doing well against them.
Form Guide: Since winning their final four home games of last season, including victories over Manchester City and Chelsea, Everton are still awaiting their first Goodison league success of the new term. Wigan have lost two of their last six top-flight away games.
Odds: Everton 1/2, Wigan 6/1, Draw 3/1
EVERTON:
Seamus Coleman insists the arrival of Royston Drenthe and Denis Stracqualursi has helped create a 'buzz' in the Everton dressing room.
Netherlands left-sided midfielder Drenthe could make his first league start after signing on loan from Real Madrid.
And Coleman said: "There is a buzz in the dressing room, particularly with the new lads coming in, and everyone is pumped up for Saturday.
"We are expected to win our home games.
"It is good to get on top of the opposition early on and that is something we will try and do again against Wigan.
Irish winger Coleman has urged fans to recreate the atmosphere they created in the 2-2 draw with Villa last week.
He added: "The fans were amazing.
"It was really loud, especially when Royston came on. The atmosphere was great and that is what we are all about here - we need to work together. We will do everything we can on the pitch.
"Last season against Wigan was a game we should have won. But it was last season and we don't want to dwell on that.
"We have a good season to look forward to this year and hopefully we can get the three points this time round."
Strategy: Drenthe is pushing for his first league start after scoring for the reserves in midweek. And the presence of the Dutch midfielder will certainly add pace to the side. Pace was the one thing Wigan failed to cope with at Manchester City last week. Yet Everton must be wary of the counter-attack threat posed by the visitors.
Injury Update: John Heitinga is hoping to return after missing the last game with a calf injury.
WIGAN:
Shaun Maloney has promised fans a response following the team's surprise exit from the Carling Cup in midweek.
The Premier League club crashed out of the competition against Championship opposition - their second straight defeat.
But Maloney, who is set to make his Latics league debut after completing a £1 million move from Celtic last month, insists there will be an improvement at Goodison.
The Scottish striker said: "We know we'll have to play a lot better when we go to Everton.
"They're all massive games in the Premier League but Saturday is even more so now after Tuesday.
"Everton are around us in the table and these are the games you have to be looking to win if you are to do anything."
Former Aston Villa striker Maloney is anxious to put memories of the Palace setback behind him and show fans that he can cut it at this level.
He added: "I need to improve and the team as a whole needs to improve, because we'll have to if we are to compete in the Premier League.
"It's a cliche that we can concentrate on the league now, but we don't really have a choice in the matter.
"We just need to get back to winning ways as soon as possible."
Strategy: The likes of captain Gary Caldwell, Hugo Rodallega, Victor Moses and Mohamed Diame are set to return after sitting out the cup tie in midweek. Martinez needs to go back to basics. After an impressive seven match unbeaten league run, the Spaniard has now seen his side lose two on the bounce.
QPR proved that Everton are vulnerable at home, but Wigan will have to be firing on all cylinders if they are to secure their first win at the Merseyside venue for six years.

Man City 3 Wigan 0: Sergio Aguero Hat-Trick Maintains City’s Flying Start
Filed under: Manchester City, Wigan, Premier League, Football, Match Reports
Sergio Aguero hit a stunning hat-trick to maintain Manchester City's flying start to the campaign as Roberto Mancini's side warmed up for their Champions League debut with another impressive victory.
City entertain Napoli on Wednesday on the back of a fourth straight league win this season after an Aguero-inspired success.
The Argentinian opened the scoring in the 13th minute before two goals in the space of six second-half minutes earned him the match ball.
It should have been more as Carlos Tevez missed a penalty on his return to the side while Micah Richards and Vincent Kompany both rattled the woodwork.
THE GOALS
13mins: That's four goals in four league games for Aguero since his £38 million move from Atletico Madrid after firing through the legs of Maynor Figueroa following a delightful move involving Tevez and David Silva. (1-0)
63mins: Substitute Samir Nasri marks his home debut by teeing up Aguero to tuck home his second. (2-0)
68mins: And there's Aguero's hat-trick. A neat finish after Silva's delicious pass. (3-0)
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
4mins: Adam Johnson is presented with a glorious opportunity to mark his return to the side with a goal, but the unmarked winger is wasteful as he fires high over the bar following Gael Clichy's cross.
9mins: Good save by keeper Ali Al Habsi, who is alert to Silva's 20-yard effort after being teed-up by the busy Johnson.
11mins: Joleon Lescott heads Kompany's goalbound header over the Wigan bar from almost point-blank range.
17mins: Penalty to City after Silva is fouled by Adrian Lopez. But Tevez fails to take advantage as his weak attempt is kept out by Al Habsi.
27mins: A defence-splitting ball by Tevez leaves Richards with only the keeper to beat yet the defender can only hit the woodwork.
35mins: The Wigan bar is rattled again. This time Kompany heads against the post and then Lescott cannot divert Richards' driven cross over the line.
59mins: A let off for City as Joe Hart keeps out Hugo Rodallega's shot after a fine run by Victor Moses.

REACTION
Mancini insisted there is still room for improvement from his side despite a fourth win in four games:
"We had about 15 chances in the first half and only scored one goal. This is a problem because the game can change at any moment. All the players played every well. But if we want to stay at the top for a long time then we need to improve."
On Aguero's hat-trick:
"He played very well but so too did all my players. I enjoyed watching it because I like it when we play football very well."
On fatigue in his squad:
"The players are so tired. Some of them have played two games for the national team and need to recover over the next three days. Carlos (Tevez) is not 100 per cent fit at this moment, but I am happy for him because for me he played very well. He linked well with Sergio. It was important for him to start and play well. Maybe in two or three days time he will be 100 per cent."
On the prospect of taking on Europe's elite in the Champions League:
"We need to be calm. It is important to improve every game. We have players who play very well but to arrive at the top we need time. We need to improve as a team."
On Napoli:
"It will be a hard game. It will be the first time that we have played in the Champions League. It will be an exciting night. Napoli are a good team and the first group game is always difficult."
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez admitted his side had been well beaten:
"I can't complain about the result but we kept going. We were not expected to come here and win but we can learn lessons from this."
On the importance of bouncing back quickly:
"I'm glad that we have a game so soon. It will give us a chance to respond."
WHAT IT MEANS
Played four, scored 15. The City juggernaut rolls on after a result that ensured City made headlines for the right reasons after the controversy over Garry Cook's resignation as chief executive. This was just the result - and performance - that Mancini had demanded ahead of his team's Champions League debut. Aguero will get the headlines but Silva and Tevez, despite his spot kick failure, were also impressive. No one will fancy facing City in this form. Wigan will be pleased to return to action so quickly on Tuesday in the Carling Cup. The Crystal Palace tie will at least give Martinez's side a chance to return to winning ways after such a comprehensive defeat.

Wigan Planning for the Future by Opening Victor Moses Talks
Filed under: Wigan, Premier League, Football
Charles N'Zogbia's departure from Wigan this summer might have left Roberto Martinez facing another battle to avoid relegation.
But Martinez already looks to have stumbled upon a ready-made replacement who cost a fraction of the £9.5 million Wigan received from Aston Villa for N'Zogbia.
Despite spending more time on the substitutes bench than the pitch since joining at the end of the January 2010 transfer window, it is a sign of how highly Victor Moses is regarded at the DW Stadium that the club have opened discussions with the winger over a new long term contract.
After all, Moses still has just under two years to run on his existing deal.
Moses seems to have been around for a long time yet he does not turn 21 until December having made his senior debut for Crystal Palace at the age of 17 in 2007.

Yet his impressive early season form during the club's unbeaten start has convinced Wigan to act sooner rather than later in order to reduce the risk of letting Moses enter the final 12 months of his contract.
Moses has been Wigan's most impressive player since taking over from N'Zogbia, who has been instrumental in keeping Martinez's team up for the last two years, at the start of the season.
And Wigan, who recently secured James McCarthy on a new five-year contract, have now demonstrated more forward thinking by opening talks with Moses.
"We have got a few young players with big roles and it is important we get stability in their careers and they can concentrate on football," said Wigan manager Martinez.
"Victor Moses is very much in that category.
"He only wants to concentrate on football and the level of football he has shown in starting the first three games has been really, really good.
Grading the Transfer Window: Swansea, Tottenham, WBA, Wigan, Wolves

Continuing our look at the transfer dealing conducted before the August 31st deadline, FanHouse UK picks out the good, the bad and the ugly deals made by the last five teams in the Premier League (based on alphabetical order, of course).
The likes of Spurs and Wigan did their usual wheeling and dealing while Swansea, West Brom and Wolves will all hope they did enough to stay out of the relegation conversation this season ... only time will tell.
In part one, we looked at the dealings of Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea. Read it here.
For part two - Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United - click here.
And part three saw us examine Newcastle, Norwich, QPR, Stoke and Sunderland. Read that here.
SWANSEA
With two clean sheets but no goals to their name, you would think the Premier League newboys were only looking in one area to strengthen on deadline day. But Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers went the other way, signing three defenders to bolster a department that was thin on the ground. Algerian Rafik Halliche joined from Fulham, while former full-back Fede Bessone returned to the Welsh club alongside new £250,000 recruit Darnel Situ. The fact Rodgers opted out of adding firewpower to his goal-shy squad speaks volumes of his trust in Danny Graham. The onus is on £3.5million record signing, who is yet to get off the mark in a Swansea shirt, to fire the Swans to safety.
Highlight: Securing the likes of Ashley Williams, Nathan Dyer and Neil Taylor on long-term contracts.
Lowlight: Losing out on millions with out-of-contract goalkeeper Dorus de Vries and midfielder Darren Pratley leaving for nothing.
Grade: C
TOTTENHAM
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was celebrating after keeping Luka Modric at the club despite the Croatia midfielder wanting to leave for Chelsea. Emmanuel Adebayor and Scott Parker also arrived during the window but they failed to land a centre-back that manager Harry Redknapp wanted. Adebayor should provide a decent goal threat and Parker will strengthen the midfield, but it is debatable whether Redknapp received the "marquee" player he wanted to get Spurs fighting for Champions League qualification again. Deadline day was productive in terms of getting rid of unwanted squad players such as Alan Hutton, David Bentley, Peter Crouch, Wilson Palacios and Jermaine Jenas.
Highlight: Luka Modric staying at the club.
Lowlight: Missing out on Gary Cahill on deadline day.
Grade: C+
WEST BROM
Not even three Premier League defeats have managed to burst the bubble of buoyancy surrounding the Baggies following a promising summer in the transfer market at the Hawthorns. Roy Hodgson has quickly built on a stunning start to life as manager by strengthening his squad with quality additions in the shape of Ben Foster, Zoltan Gera and, most of all, Shane Long. Equally crucial, though, has been their success in keeping hold of their star names, particularly last season's top scorer, Peter Odemwingie, who recently signed a new contract. Their only disappointment will have been their failed and very public pursuit of Owen Hargreaves.
Highlight: Long looks a star in the making.
Lowlight: Being strung along for virtually the entire summer by Hargreaves.
Grade: B
WIGAN
It could have been worse. Charles N'Zogbia's move to Aston Villa prompted fears that highly-rated duo Hugo Rodallega, who is in the final year of contract, and James McCarthy could follow the French winger out of the DW Stadium. Not only has McCarthy signed a new long term deal, Rodallega remains although manager Roberto Martinez could decide to cash in on the Colombian forward in January. Martinez has spent the N'Zogbia money wisely, but Shaun Maloney and winger Albert Crusat will be under pressure to make immediate impacts. Patrick van Aanholt, who has joined on loan from Chelsea, will also have his work cut out if he is to make the same impact as Tom Cleverley last season.
Highlight: Keeping the likes of Rodallega and McCarthy from the clutches of other clubs.
Lowlight: Failing to land striker Peter Odemwingie from West Brom could yet prove costly.

Deadline Day Round-up: Craig Bellamy In, Raul Meireles Out at Liverpool

Liverpool were the focus of a dramatic end to deadline day after Craig Bellamy and Raul Meireles completed 11th hour moves in and out of Anfield.
Meireles' departure to Chelsea on a four-year deal for a £12 million fee came as a particularly surprising development after news the Portuguese star had handed in a transfer request came little over half an hour before the 11pm deadline.
Meanwhile, Wales striker Bellamy, who spent last season on loan at Championship side Cardiff, is back at Anfield four years after leaving the Merseyside and will wear the No. 39 shirt.
QPR and Stoke had appeared in the frame to sign Bellamy earlier in the day, however the chance to return to the club where he spent a controversial year in 2007 proved too good to turn down for the 32-year-old.
Further developments in a breathless day at Anfield saw Joe Cole snub late interest from Aston Villa to join Lille on a season-long loan, Christian Poulsen join French side Evian and David Ngog make a permanent move to Bolton.

Sunderland signed Nicklas Bendtner from Arsenal on a season-long loan, while Villa signed Jermaine Jenas and Alan Hutton on a respective season-long loan and permanent deal from Tottenham.
Spurs managed to keep hold of one of their key men in Luka Modric, whom manager Harry Redknapp claimed was the subject of a rejected £40 million bid from Chelsea, althought a move for Bolton's Gary Cahill failed to materialise for the White Hart Lane outfit.
They did, however, succeed in landing Football Writers' Association Player of the Year Scott Parker in a £5 million move from West Ham.
David Bentley has headed in the opposite direction on a season-long loan, while the Hammers also signed Henri Lansbury from Arsenal on a similar deal and Guy Demel from Hamburg.
Manchester City completed their shock move for free agent Owen Hargreaves, with the former Manchester United midfielder arriving on a one-year contract, while Carlos Tevez has remained at the Etihad Stadium.
QPR signed Shaun Wright-Phillips from Manchester City and Anton Ferdinand from Sunderland.
Scott Dann left Birmingham for Blackburn in a £6 million move which could rise to £8 million.
Rovers also recruited striker Yakubu from Everton, who have attempted to offset the loss of Mikel Arteta to Arsenal by signing Royston Drenthe from Real Madrid and Argentine striker Denis Stracqualursi from Tigre on season-long loans.
The Toffees also sold striker Jermaine Beckford to big-spending Championship side Leicester in a £3 million transfer.
Wigan signed Shaun Maloney on a two-year deal from Celtic for £1 million as well as signing Chelsea's 21-year-old Dutch left-back Patrick van Aanholt on a season-long loan. The Blues also allowed Gael Kakuta to join Bolton on loan.
Fulham fought off late competition from Newcastle to land Costa Rica forward Bryan Ruiz from FC Twente in a move worth around £10.6 million.
The Cottagers also signed experienced Juventus defender Zdenek Grygera and former Porto player Orlando Sa on free transfers and allowed Rafik Halliche to join Swansea on loan for the remainder of 2011.

Forward Craig Bellamy made
a dramatic deadline day return to Liverpool on Wednesday night after completing an 11th hour move from Manchester City.

Bellamy's arrival was just one of a number of developments on a busy day at Anfield
which saw Joe Cole snub late interest from Aston Villa to join Lille on a season-long loan, Christian Poulsen join French side Evian and David Ngog make a permanent move to Bolton.
There was also one further twist with half an hour of the window remaining when it emerged Chelsea target Raul Meireles had handed in a transfer request, leaving his future on Merseyside shouded in mystery as the 11pm deadline passed.
